Chief of Clan MacKintosh Arms

On 14 April 1965, 50 years ago today, these arms were matriculated in name of Marion Elizabeth Gwendoline Mackintosh, who was the daughter of Silvia Marion Mackintosh of Daviot-Kinrara of the Chiefly House of Clan Chattan. Her said mother had matriculated the same arms, as representer of the family, in October 1954, which confirmed to her a version of the arms of Lachlan Mackintosh of Kinrara which were recorded in his name in Volume 1 in around 1672. The red label of three points charged with a white pheon (or arrow head) indicates that Marion was, at that time, heiress-presumptive to her brother Aeneas. It is very common (although not essential) for a woman’s arms to be shown on a lozenge, without crest and helmet, and surmounted by a true lover’s knot. The blazon is: Upon a Shield of lozenge form, Quarterly; per pale and per chevron, 1st, Or, a lion rampant Gules, armed and langued Azure (for Wemyss and Macduff); 2nd, Argent, a dexter hand couped fesswise holding a human heart Gules, a label of three points Azure charged with as many bulls' heads cabossed Argent (for Mackintosh of Mackintosh-Torcastle); 3rd, Azure, a boars head erased Or, armed Proper and langued Gules (in allusion to Gordon of Lochinvar); 4th, Or, a lymphad Azure, oars in saltire and flagged Gules (for clan Chattan); over all, surmounting the quarters, a chevron Sable for Daviot-Kinrara, and in chief, for her difference, a label of three points Gules the centre point charged of a pheon Argent.
