Clan Garden History
A form of the name Gardyne which takes it’s name from the barony of Gardyne in the parish of Kirkden, Angus. The name is common in Arbroath and surroundings, and people of this name have held lands in Aberdeen, Banff, and Perth for centuries.
Gardyn of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296.
Patrick Gardyne de eodem appears as witness in 1450.
Maister Gilbert Gardin was minister at Fordice in 1574.
Other forms of the name include Garn, Gardin, Dalgarn, and Jardine. A long running feud between the Gardynes and the Guthries saw the killings of a number of family members on each side. Some of the deaths have brought out contradictory versions of events from the two families, especially in regards to the murder of Patrick Gardyne of that Ilk by William Guthrie in 1578. However, in the end the Guthries turned out to be the more powerful of the two, and the 10th Laird, David Gardyne, sold up and left the Gardyne land and castle, and bought the Lawton estate.
