Lochalsh

The Kyle of Lochalsh is the gateway to the Isle of Skye and and Wester Ross. It’s a great place to visit, has it all. Epic castles like Eilean Donan, Beautiful Plocton. Lochs like Lochcarron.  The walks around this area are incredible.

Where to stay

We have rented a cottage in Plockton before, there is lots to do here and great places to eat and drink.  We have also rented in Stromferry, which again was lovely.  It had less places you could just walk to but was such a beautiful area.  One of our favourite houses we have rented looked over Loch Carron.

Camping:   There are campsites at Shiel Bridge (Cool Camping).  Wild camping spots down on the beach by Applecross and also a campsite.  Just across the Skye Bridge you have Ashaig Camping and Caravan Site. At Dournie there’s Ardelve Caravan And Camping Park (I don’t know what this one is like).    If you are a caravaner then there’s also Reraig Caravan Site at Balmacara.  There are wigwams at Dornie (Dornie Wigwams) if you fancy a bit of glamping. 

 

Make sure you visit

The bridge over to Skye is free.

You can get the train to Inverness which take you through some incredible scenery.

Falls of Glomach

The Cluanie Inn – if you want some more adventurous walks this is a good starting point.

Glen Shiel – the site of the famous Jacobite battle from here you can see the magnificent Five Sisters of Kintail

Duirinish – see Highland cattle grazing

Take the old drovers’ road to Glenelg, you can also get a ferry from here across to Skye.

Balmacara – here there is some great woodland and woodland walks

Visit Plocton – a must!   Can also take boat trips out from here.

Walks around Loch Carron – just stunning.
