Dr David Starkey is playing on English nationalism and he said England was once a great country. It was. It isn't and will never be again.
Scotland has always been aware of itself in real terms. that cant be said for England. No more empire.
Britain as a whole is a feeble country kept in the world news headlines and stage with it's helpless one sided relationship with the United States.
Scotland is also feeble as it's not grasped independence and taken it's place in Europe as a little country.
This is not a fear for Scotland as it is for England. England's glory is as feeble a remark as Dr Starkey gibbering nonsense.

It's a bit sad really and fairly typical of these publicity seeking academics. They seem to get a taste for it and then go to any length to be controversial in a bid to further their own career. We all like to criticise the b and c list celebs that populate Ok and Hello magazine but in a way people like Starkey are even worse. they are happy to punt out their blinkered views just to further their own careers.

Britain as a whole has a rich heritage and England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have all made a global impact on science, technology, politics, the arts & culture.

I think what winds some people up is that the Scots are actually running the UK at the moment with Scots in all the top jobs (albeit making a right pigs ear of it!). That was the great thing about devolution - all the really incompetent ones went to Westminster :-)

I think the audience reaction gives a better representation of what people across the UK think about Scotland.

I was recently at a funeral in Glasgow where a first-rate piper was playing a piobaireachd at the door. Melancholy yet uplifting, the highland bagpipe is untouchable in these situations I think.

So, when are we going to see David Starkey dartboards on the website?
