All hail to the female chiefs

Amanda Moffet — Mon, 21 Mar 2011 16:21:37 +0000

Men and women have long been recognised in Scotland as equals. A good example of this is that female chiefs supply a goodly number of places in the current 135-strong listings of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. They hold exactly the same responsibilities as their male counterparts. Here are some shining examples of female clan chiefs:

Madam Arabella Kincaid

Chief of Clan Kincaid, Madam Arabella Kincaid says: ‘When I became chief it was almost like being a mother for the first time. I get letters all the time, mainly from the US, and we’ve had an active clan association for more than 50 years.’

Flora Fraser, Lady Saltoun Chief of Clan Fraser is not only a female Clan Chief but is currently the only female holder of a lordship who also holds a seat in the House of Lords as an elected hereditary peer. Now that’s impressive.

To celebrate this and upcoming Mother’s Day I have started to put together a list:

Clan Elliot : Madam Margaret Elliot of Redheugh
Clan Fraser: Rt Hon. The Lady Saltoun
Clan Grierson: Sarah Grierson of Lag
Clan Hunter: Madam Pauline Hunter of Hunterson
Clan Kincaid: Madam Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid
Clan MacDougall: Morag MacDougall of MacDougall
Clan MacKay: The Hon. Elizabeth Fairbairn
Clan MacKinnon: Madam Ann MacKinnon of MacKinnon
Clan Mar: Margaret of Mar, 31st Countess of Mar
Clan Moffat: Madam Jean Moffat of that ilk

Argentina Has Highest Population of Scottish Descent Outwith English Speaking Countries

donald — Thu, 17 Mar 2011 18:18:08 +0000

I just found out that outside of the English speaking world, Argentina has the largest number of people of Scottish descent, which I thought was pretty interesting. The Argentine-Scot population currently stands at an estimated 100,000, and has existed, at varying levels, for over 180 years.

Over the years there have been some very notable Scottish-Argentinians. These include

Cecilia Grierson - Cecilia was the first Argentine woman to earn a Doctor in Medicine degree, and had Scottish ancestry.
Alexander Watson Hutton – a Glasgow schoolteacher, Hutton emigrated to Argentina in his late twenties. He taught for a few years in Buenos Aries, before going on to found the Argentine Association Football League, now known as the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino, in 1893. It was the first football league outwith the the UK. He is known as the ‘father of Argentinian football’.
Duncan Antonio Stewart Agell – Born in Buenos Aries in 1833 to a Scottish father and Uruguayan mother, Duncan Stewart was for a very brief time the President of Uruguay.
